Bartlett’s Gene Chandler Up For Speaker Of The NH House
Concord, NH – Today the New Hampshire House is electing its new speaker to replace Shawn Jasper, who is leaving to become the state agriculture commissioner. Jasper’s resignation takes effect at 9:59 this morning, a minute before the House session begins.
Republicans, who hold a majority in the House, on Tuesday picked Deputy Speaker Gene Chandler from Bartlett as their nominee. Chandler, who is in his 18th year in the House, previously served as speaker from 2001 to 2004.
Governor Chris Sununu Released a statement about the nomination saying “Representative Chandler is a strong, principled conservative, and I applaud the Republican House Caucus’ decision today to support him as House Speaker….I look forward to working with Representative Chandler in the upcoming legislative session and over the course of the next year, so we can continue to make New Hampshire the best place to live, work, and raise a family.”
On the Democratic side, Rep. Steve Shurtleff of Concord is the only candidate, and Rep. Jim McConnell of Swanzey was nominated as a Libertarian.
The voting gets underway Thursday morning.
NBC Today Show Anchor Matt Lauer Fired Over “Inappropriate Sexual Behavior” Complaint

Long Time Today Show Anchor Matt Lauer has been fired from NBC News. NBC Announced earlier this morning that Lauer was fired after an employee filed a complaint about “inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace,” Savannah Guthrie made the announcement at the top of the “Today” show, where Lauer has been an anchor for over twenty years.
Guthrie said she was told of Lauer’s firing just moments before going on the air.
During the show she said “This is a sad morning at ‘Today’ and NBC News,” she continued “As I’m sure you can understand, we are devastated. I’m heartbroken for Matt.”
Guthrie also said she was heartbroken for the woman who accused Lauer of misconduct, noting “it’s long overdue” that women feel comfortable coming forward against abusive men.
NBC News chairman Andrew Lack sent out a memo to staff that it was the first complaint lodged against Lauer in his career at the network. But he said “we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident.”
Lauer is the most recent high profile person in the media to be fired or suspended after allegations of sexual misconduct. CBS News Morning Anchor Charlie Rose was fired last week after claims of years of sexual misconduct was reported by The Washington Post.
North Conway Voted #1 Ski Town In The USA

North Conway, NH –Throughout November, USA Today/10 Best has been running readers polls for the Best Ski Town and the Best XC Ski Resort, and the results were announced today. North Conway, NH was named the #1 Best Ski Town in the USA and Jackson Ski Touring made it to the #9 spot on the Top Ten XC Centers in the U.S. One of just a hand full of towns nominated in the Northeast, ski and winter enthusiasts declared North Conway the best ski destination in the country over such legendary icons as Aspen, Breckenridge, Taos and Steamboat Springs. Also, notably, Bretton Woods Nordic Center was nominated among the top 20 XC Ski Resorts in the USA by USA Today/10 Best editors.
Editors of USA Toda/10Best asked readers, “What makes a great ski town? Some would say it’s convenient access to the slopes, for others, maybe it’s the variety of restaurants, bars, shops and accommodations. Yet others might gravitate toward a small town vibe or historic atmosphere.” Clearly, North Conway fits the bill for all aspects of a great ski town, and readers confirmed it with their votes. In describing North Conway, USA Today/10 Best editors noted, “Nestled within the scenic White Mountains of New Hampshire, North Conway sits within a half-hour drive of more than a dozen alpine and Nordic ski resorts. Visitors off the slopes can explore the town’s pastel-hued Victorian architecture oozing New England charm.”
Voting took place online throughout November and both the Mt Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce and Jackson Ski Touring Foundation spread the word via newsletters and social media to vote daily. North Conway held the number-one position for the Best Ski Town throughout most of the voting period serving as a reminder of its enormous appeal to skiers and winter travelers.
“We’ve always known that North Conway, and the surrounding Mt Washington Valley, was a world-class ski destination,” said Janice Crawford, Executive Director of the Mt Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce. “With 13 ski resorts and XC Centers, tubing hills and mountain coasters, not to mention tons of tax-free shopping, amazing restaurants and plenty of apres ski fun, there’s something for every skier and rider in the family here, 24/7,” she added. And skiers came forth to agree and declare North Conway tops in the USA for ski destinations!
When he heard the news, EasternSlopes.com Executive Editor and long-time ski writer, Tim Jones, remarked, “My wife and I moved to the Mount Washington Valley for many reasons. But the number one reason we are here and not anywhere else is that this is unquestionably the best ski town in the northeast, perhaps in the country. Em skis at least twice a week and loves fresh corduroy. I ski almost every day all winter, lift-serviced (groomed and ungroomed) and backcountry on both Alpine and Tele skis. In any other ski town, we’d have one, maybe two options close by. Here, there are seven alpine ski areas nearby that offer a combined 1,612 skiable acres, 331 trails, 50 lifts and 9312 vertical feet of terrain. That makes for a lot of options.”
With North Conway and Jackson among the region’s best known villages, Mt Washington Valley is home to 13 ski resorts and XC Centers. Referred to by many as “the birthplace of skiing,” North Conway has been garnering accolades as a ski town for decades. In 2011, North Conway was named the #1 Destination Village for Skiers. In 2012 National Geographic named North Conway among the top 25 ski towns worldwide. In 2015 Lonely Planet named North Conway to it’s Best of the US 2015 list, and in 2016 Travel & Leisure readers named North Conway among the top Mountain Towns. North Conway has been nominated among the top Ski Towns in the USA by USA Today/10 Best for three years in a row, and all three years has made it among the top five ski towns on the list.
And when it comes to XC skiing, Jackson Ski Touring Foundation has shared the limelight too, being named #1 Family Friendly Snowshoe Nordic Center in the USA by Snowshoe Magazine. 2017 marks the second year for Jackson Ski Touring Foundation to make it to USA Today’s Top Ten XC Resorts list. As Tim Jones noted “There are six cross country areas with groomed trail networks right here in the valley. The statistics are staggering: Over 430 kilometers of trails, most of them groomed. And, again, that doesn’t even begin to count the miles of trails available in the backcountry if you are willing to explore. I can cross country ski all winter without making the same loop twice.”

Cranmore Kicks Of 80th Season With Kearsarge Condo Phase 1 Completion

North Conway, NH – State and local leaders gathered at Cranmore Mountain Resort today for an official ribbon cutting ceremony that marked the completion of Phase One of Cranmore’s $50 Million base area redevelopment project called Kearsarge Brook Condominiums at Cranmore. When completed, the six phase Master Plan will bring six new buildings, 106 year round residences and 45,000 square feet of new day lodge space to the resort.
Today’s ceremony recognized Phase One of Kearsarge Brook Condominiums which sits at the base of Cranmore’s South Slope, providing 18 two and three bedroom condominiums with easy access to the slopes and views of Cranmore and the surrounding White Mountains.
Cranmore President and General Manager Ben Wilcox kicked off the event by welcoming the crowd and acknowledging the completion of Phase One of Kearsarge Brook on the eve of the Resort’s 80th Anniversary. “We’ve been talking about Cranmore’s future, Kearsarge Brook, for the past few years, and today we can say this is Cranmore’s present.” Wilcox continued by outlining the larger picture plan of the project which is to make Kearsarge Brook a trophy resort in New England. “Kearsarge Brook will heighten everything done at the mountain, and will set the table for the next 80 years to come.”
Special Assistant to Senator Jeanne Shaheen, Chuck Henderson, shared the Senator’s comments at today’s Ribbon Cutting. “Today’s ceremony marks a major step forward as you write the next chapter in Cranmore’s rich history. I would like to congratulate the folks at Cranmore, the Fairbank Group and all who came together to make this vision a reality.”
Joe Kenney, Executive Councilor, congratulated the resort and Fairbank Group on the completion of the first phase. “This particular project and future development is going to be a great addition to the ski industry and the state of New Hampshire,” he stated.
Dave Miller, President of Glen Builders – the project’s general contractor, stressed the local focus of the project, working with over 70 vendors and suppliers.
Cranmore owner, Brian Fairbank, who also operates Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort in Massachusetts and Bromley Mountain in Vermont, implemented a similar development at Jiminy Peak in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. Fairbank had high praise for the team who completed the project. “With Kearsarge Brook, we’re going to do everything we can to preserve the character, but wanted to make sure what we did in this base area was unlike anything else in New England. Taking this base area and making it spectacularly beautiful, becomes an essential ingredient for us to say how we’re going to differentiate ourselves for the future. Kearsarge Brook is a symbol of that uniqueness.”
Phase One residences range from 1,220 to 1,695 square feet for the top floor Penthouse. Phase One owners will enjoy ski-in/ski-out access to the slopes as well as a variety of resort amenities, gated parking and private owners ski lockers.
