Around 500 Valley Residents March For Women In Jackson

JACKSON, NH – Several hundred people attended a Women’s Marches in the Mount Washington Valley this weekend.

The marches marked the 2nd anniversary of the march last year after President Trump’s inauguration.

Around 500 women, men, children, and dogs marched in Jackson yesterday, nearly doubling the amount that marched last year. Marchers filled the streets as they traveled from the Jackson Covered Bridge to the Grammar School.

There were also several marchers in Tamworth as well, including many who marched in Tamworth then hopped over to march in Jackson.

The Marches coincided with hundreds of marches across the country on both Saturday and Sunday, which attracted millions of participants.

Kevin Peare Memorial Skate Park Off To A Great Start

CONWAY, NH – A local group looking to build a Skate Park in the Mount Washington Valley has taken off running.

In the four short months that the Kevin Peare Memorial Skate Park Committee was been running they raised $7,082.

The idea came as a memorial to Kevin Peare, a valley local whose dream was to have a skate park in Conway.

Kevin’s mother Anna said things kicked off with the Mud Bowl Parade inviting them to march and then donating their prize money to the cause.

After that kick off they had a fundraiser each month including a dine to donates at McGraths Tavern and the Flatbread Company, an event at Rye Skate park, and Grow a beard for Kev contest.

Currently they have a skateboard Art show going on at the Conway public library, going until February second. At the art show patrons can purchase the boards, with 100% of the proceeds going to the skate park. Anna said that some of the boards sold before they even hung them.

The group has worked well on always keeping their name out there with t-shirts and other swag, donation cans and appearing on Magic 104’s Morning Show, the Conway Daily Sun and Valley Vision.

They even have their own drinks at local restaurants where a portion of the proceeds go towards the cause. The 302 has the Skate Park Sangria and Cafe Noche has the Fancy Guy. Anna said they are also working on getting at drink at The Margarita Grill as well.

They’ve also received numerous donations from local groups, businesses and individuals. Most recently they received 3, $1,000 donations from Settlers Green, Vito Marcello, and one private donation.

2018 has already gotten off to a great start for group with  two $500 donations Veno electric and Peking.

So far they have not figured out a location for the park but Anna said that they have meetings with local officials to figure out where one can go.

Looking to the future Peare said that they are working on getting their website up and running (Goskate4kev.com), and have a lot of fun events planned with the hopes of having at least one fundraiser every month.

Upcoming events include a sip and paint, build your own skateboard workshop, and taking part in the Cup Cake Battle at the North Conway Community Center.

Preliminary Hearing For Man Charged In Hospital Shooting Today

HAVERHILL, N.H. (AP) — A preliminary hearing is set for a man accused of killing his mother in a New Hampshire hospital’s intensive care unit.

The hearing for 49-year-old Travis Frink of Warwick, Rhode Island, is scheduled for Monday.

Frink is accused of shooting his mother multiple times at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon on Sept. 12. He was indicted last month on both first- and second-degree murder charges.

Frink pleaded not guilty at his initial court appearance and is being held without bail.

His mother, 70-year-old Pamela Ferriere, was from Groton.

76-Year-Old Found Safe After Getting Lost On South Moat Mountain

CONWAY, NH – A 76-year-old man was found after getting lost on south moat mountain last night. Fish and game authorities said that marvin schwartz of Conway went hiking on moat mountain trail yesterday (Thursday) at around 10 am with the expectation of being home around 1 that afternoon.

When he hadn’t returned home by 5pm his wife reported him overdue and conservation officers responded. Officers found his car at the moat mountain trailhead parking area and were able to follow his tracks locating him at around 9:30pm in the red eagle brook drainage less than a mile from Passaconaway Road.

He was in good spirits and unharmed. Conservation officers walked him to Hammond Lane where he was driven back to his vehicle.

He told conservation officers that he hiking to south moat mountain and he slipped on a slab of ice taking him off trail. He attempted to self-rescue by following a drainage that eventually lead to Passaconaway Road but became disoriented when it became dark.

Fish and Game officials said this is a good reminder to hikers to always carry appropriate equipment for unexpected situations and be prepared to spend the night if necessary.

Governor Sununu To Senators “Do Your Job”

 

CONCORD, NH – New Hampshire’s Governor sent a message to Washington today in reference to the possible Government shut down titled “Do Your Job”.

In his letter Governor Chris Sununu said that the Senate has the opportunity to reauthorize the Childrens Health Insurance Program, which provides health coverage to eligible children, through both Medicaid and separate CHIP programs.

The program insurance close to 15 thousand young Granite Staters.

Governor Sununu said “Now is the time to put politics aside so that we can work towards a solution that gives New Hampshire’s children access to the healthcare they need, especially during their most vulnerable and formative years,”

The Governor continued “The Senate has the opportunity to reauthorize CHIP for six years – the longest reauthorization of health insurance for American children in history. I implore Senators Shaheen and Hassan to vote for today’s continuing resolution.”

He ended the letter saying “DACA is a serious issue that should be addressed, but not at the expense of shutting down the federal government and jeopardizing children’s healthcare. “
